everyone wants design

It turns out, everyone enjoys good design.  I myself have never been opposed to061305_10 buying clothing from any store, regardless of name, but I have to admit that sometimes it can be more than frustrating trying to find your size or the origin of the misplaced item or waiting in the mile long lines while people are purchasing enough toilet paper to last for 3 years or junkfood in bulk.  According to this article in WWD, some of these mass merchants are considering coming to cities (double yea!!!) but to do so they have to up the ante in terms of store design and presentation.  I'm all for that -- the only thing I miss about New Jersey was being able to head down the road to my local target/BB&B,B&N/Michaels mega center.......not that I want Manhattan to turn into the suburbs (even though it's already happening, been to Union Square lately?) but sometimes, it would be nice to not have to run to 5 different stores.

a cautionary tale?

060305_26_1i remember searching for my first job when i graduated from school.  as evidenced in the excellent article below, i believed that all of my jobs and internships in college would have at least helped to to obtain a half-way decent job.  this was not the case in new york city, much to the dismay and disbelief from my parents, among other things.  the truth is, this business is difficult and sometimes you have to edit your "dream".  i believe that there are many ways to harness talent and creativity, and finding some slightly alternative way to market your abilities (hint, hint, freddy & ma)  can prove to be both rewarding and more realistic.  as i watch my father's company grow i realize that dreams don't develop overnight, but over time and hard work.  please read the article below, it's wonderful. and find a new way to execute your dream.
