In case you didn't know, today is the last day of fashion week in New York, meaning that all of the "important" designers gather together to display what they are doing for the upcoming season, in this case, Spring 2006. For the past 14 years, I have been devouring Vogue, Elle, W, Bazzaar, WWD, and anything else fashion related that I can get my hands on. I have watched hours of fashion shows on television, watched recaps of fashion shows, interviews with fashion designers, and every red carpet event possible just to see what is going on in that world.
Thanks to a very generous designer friend of mine, Natasha Ulyanov, I was able to attend my first fashion show, J Mendel, yesterday afternoon. After years of following these events and never actually being there, I cannot articulate the wave of emotion that I felt. It's difficult to explain my love of fashion and its history, but yesterday one thing was absolutely clear to me: this is my passion. Being around it makes me happy. Of course it is a completely frivolous and petty industry at times, but overall, fashion is like sculpture, something that should be preserved in museums for generations to come because it speaks volumes about what is going on in our world, sometimes by what it says and sometimes by what it doesn't. If you have ever studied the history of fashion, or any type of art history, it is remarkable what you will learn about the state of the world during that time period.
