Freddy sent me this article today and we felt it was particularly relevant to F&M
and the message
we want to send. PLEASE READ!
In Spain they are putting restrictions on models requiring that they meet a BMI of at least 18. They feel that the fashion industry has a responsibility to portray a healthy image and that the use of waif-like models contributes to eating disorder and poor body image.
I think it makes sense -- I was obsessed with magazines as a young girl (still am) and I never got over the fact that I stopped growing at 5'4" and last saw 100 pounds in 5th grade. There's a difference between looking like Nicole Richie and Mandy Moore, one looks healthy, the other, well, it depends on the day I suppose. It's a very unrealistic to try and achieve those standards of beauty and quite dangerous in some cases. There are some girls that REALLY do have those proportions without trying TOO hard and then there are the rest of us who will NEVER look like that no matter what we try. In any case, F&M wants to promote a more realistic version of beauty. We promise to NEVER hire an insanely skinny model, in fact we might try to do the job ourselves, what with all the fabulous retouching that's available these days......what do YOU think?
